Shading floor to ceiling windows at gable end roof?

it's a california style ranch with a southwest exposure that gets real hot in the summer. the gable end roof extends 5' out supported by 3 laminated beams cantivered from the inside. it's a cathedral ceiling on the inside. is there some kind of darker fabric/ awning out there that i could attach to the end of the beams to reduce the summer heat? better yet, is there something retractable? thoughts? thanks.
