In general, do most UK universities want a core-subject A-level, from a candidate?

Competition for university spots are quite fierce and universities will give preference to those who do the tradition academic subjects over the soft subjects like law or media studies. Another option to consider is the IB and the IB will give you more options at university than A-Levels.
